More Than a Workout: Finding Strength & Community Through Lagree in North Texas
There is something special about finding a workout you actually look forward to. Not just because of how you feel when the 45 minutes are over, but because of the people you get to spend those 45 minutes with.
At Aura Lagree in Gunter, Texas, we've watched women walk through our doors looking for a great workout and find something they weren't necessarily searching for: community. Women from Gunter, Van Alstyne, Anna, Celina, and surrounding North Texas communities come together on the Microformer with different fitness levels, different schedules, and completely different reasons for being there.
Some are moms squeezing a class into an already packed day. Some are getting back into fitness after years away. Some have tried Pilates, strength training, cardio classes, and just about every fitness trend out there. Others are walking into a boutique fitness studio for the very first time.
What they have in common is simply that they showed up.
Why Community Can Change the Way You Feel About Fitness
Finding the "perfect" workout doesn't matter very much if you don't want to keep doing it. Real strength is built through consistency, and sometimes consistency becomes a little easier when you know there will be familiar faces waiting for you.
You start recognizing the woman who always takes the Microformer next to yours. You talk before class, laugh about how sore you were after the last one, shake through the same brutal hold, and celebrate when someone reaches her 20th, 50th, or 100th class. Somewhere along the way, going to a fitness class becomes less about checking exercise off your to-do list and more about having a place you genuinely enjoy being.
That's the kind of community we're building at Aura. You don't have to know anyone when you walk through the door, and you certainly don't have to be outgoing. But there's something about struggling through those last few seconds of a movement together that has a way of making strangers feel a little less like strangers.
So, What Exactly Is Lagree?
If you've been searching for Pilates classes in Celina, Van Alstyne, Anna, Gunter, or the surrounding North Texas area, you may have come across Lagree without really knowing what the difference is. The first thing to know is that although the two can look similar at first glance, Lagree is not Pilates.
At Aura, Lagree is performed on a machine called the Microformer. The method combines strength, endurance, cardio, balance, and core work into one low-impact workout. Rather than relying on fast repetitions or momentum, Lagree asks you to slow everything down and maintain control through the movement.
That slow tempo keeps your muscles under tension for longer periods of time, which is a big part of what makes the workout so challenging. Your muscles are working incredibly hard, but you aren't relying on jumping, running, or repetitive pounding to create that intensity. It's the combination Lagree is known for: high intensity and low impact.
For people who want to feel challenged and build strength without making high-impact exercise the center of their routine, that combination can completely change what a workout feels like.
Strength, Cardio and Endurance in 45 Minutes
One of the reasons I love Lagree is its efficiency. Life is already busy enough without feeling like you need a completely separate workout for every aspect of your fitness.
During a 45-minute Lagree class, the resistance of the Microformer and the slow, controlled movements challenge your strength. The extended periods of muscular tension build endurance. Quick transitions and continuous movement elevate your heart rate and incorporate a cardiovascular challenge. Meanwhile, your core is working throughout the class to stabilize, balance, and control your body.
The core work is one of the things that tends to surprise people most when they first try Lagree. It isn't something we save for five minutes at the end of class. Your core becomes part of almost everything you do on the Microformer, including movements you might initially think are targeting your legs or upper body.
And then there is the shaking.
If you've ever watched a Lagree class and wondered why everyone's muscles seem to be trembling, you'll probably understand within your first class. As your muscles stay under tension and begin to fatigue, that famous Lagree shake starts to appear. It doesn't mean you're doing something wrong. It means you're discovering just how challenging moving slowly can actually be.
You Don't Have to Keep Up With Anyone Else
One of my favorite things about Lagree is that a room full of women can take the exact same class while experiencing completely different workouts. Someone may have taken 100 Lagree classes while the woman beside her is taking her very first. One might use more resistance or choose a more advanced variation while another modifies the movement. They're still taking the class together.
There is no leaderboard, and there is no prize for moving the fastest. In fact, in Lagree, moving faster can make the movement easier. The goal is control.
That creates a very different energy inside a fitness class. You can stop worrying about whether you're keeping up with the person beside you and start paying attention to your own body, your own form, and what you're capable of that day.
You aren't there to become the woman on the Microformer next to you. You're there to become stronger as yourself.
And for the Moms Who Spend Most of Their Time Taking Care of Everyone Else
There are a lot of moms in our community, and I've seen how easy it can be for taking care of yourself to slowly move further and further down the list. Between work, school schedules, appointments, practices, meals, laundry, and the hundred other things that somehow need to happen every day, exercise can start to feel like another obligation you're supposed to squeeze in.
Lagree feels different because for 45 minutes, it demands your attention. You're thinking about your form, controlling the carriage, listening for the next cue, and trying to hold on for just a few more seconds. There isn't much mental space left for tomorrow's schedule or the grocery list.
For those 45 minutes, you're allowed to focus on yourself.
Then class ends, everyone starts talking again, and you realize you've done something that was entirely yours. You leave a little stronger than when you arrived, perhaps a little clearer mentally, and probably laughing with someone else about how you're both going to get down the stairs tomorrow.
That part of fitness doesn't show up on a smartwatch. But I think it matters.
